Passing of Ross Mealiff
There was much sadness and genuine grief at the untimely passing of Ross Mealiff which occurred last Monday. Ross made many friends in life and no enemies. He was a staunch supporter of the GAA and did a lot for clubs and teams in both his beloved Monaghan and Cavan. When Ross took over ownership of the Hotel Kilmore in 2005 he continued the sponsorship of the Cavan County championships which was to last for the next 16 years. All County Board meetings and conventions were held in the Kilmore and soon the Hotel became synonymous with Cavan GAA. Ross was the perfect host and he and his staff always ensured that players and officials were welcomed and treated well. The generous financial return from the sponsorship to the GAA in Cavan was deeply appreciated by Cavan County Board. Different clubs in Cavan also benefited from his generosity. Ross supported his native county Monaghan with a passion but he loved his adopted county too and was delighted when Cavan were successful. Understandably he kept a low profile when both counties clashed and were in the heat of battle but once the game was over he enjoyed the banter and post-mortems. Cavan County Board offers its deepest sympathies to his wife Kate, son James, daughter Hannah, his mother Joan, and the extended Mealiff family.
Passing of Peter (Pee) Cahill
The passing of Ross on Monday last was followed on Tuesday by the sudden death of Peter Cahill, another well-known Cavan GAA personality. Peter, popularly known as Pee, played regularly with the Cavan junior team in the early 1970s and following his performances he was called into the Cavan senior team but work commitments in England often curtailed his involvement. He won a couple of senior championship medals with Crosserlough and he continued to give great service to that famed club in leaner times in the later 1970s and early 1980s. He is remembered as an outstanding midfielder, ball winner and team leader who played with his heart on his sleeve in every game club or county.
Pee was a loyal supporter of both club and county and he was a regular attender at all games including some in the Cavan championships last weekend in Kingspan Breffni. Cavan County Board extends deepest sympathy to his wife Monica, daughters Frances and Rosaleen, sons Peter and Kieran and the extended Cahill family.
