The funeral arrangements for former Ballyhaise and Cavan great Steve Duggan, who passed away in Miami, Florida, last month, have been announced. Reposing at Lakelands Funeral Home, Dublin Road Cavan on Friday 17 May from 5.00 pm – 8.00 pm. Requiem Mass on Saturday in St Mary’s Church, Ballyhaise at 11.00 am with interment afterwards in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Castletara.
Cavan Co Board GAA extends deepest sympathies to Steve’s family and the extended Duggan families on his passing. Steve is fondly remembered by old playing colleagues and supporters for his many superb, whole-hearted displays for Ballyhaise, Cavan and Ulster.
Steve learned his football in his native Ballyhaise and he played on the Cavan minor teams in 1964 and 1965. He also played on the Cavan junior and under 21 teams and was called into the Cavan senior team in 1966. Over the next 14 years he gave outstanding service in the blue jersey and was among the top forwards in the country throughout the latter years of the 1960s and 1970s. His ability to carry the ball at speed through a defence and finish with a score were hallmarks of his numerous displays. He played many great games for Cavan and some of them were against the outstanding Down team of that era. His performance against Down in the Ulster semi-final in Castleblaney in 1976, when he scored ten points stands out for anyone lucky to be in attendance. He played in five Ulster championships finals (including the drawn game and replay in 1976) and he was on the victorious Cavan team in 1967 and 1969. He also played with Ulster and won a prestigious Railway Cup medal in 1970.
Steve also gave outstanding service to his club and he rarely missed a game of any description in the green and gold of Ballyhaise. He played a key role in the club’s junior league success in 1965 and intermediate championship victory in 1968. He played in the county senior championship finals in 1976 and 1978. His sudden passing is widely mourned. My he rest in peace.
